The 130 year old museum is in need of major repairs to the foundation and to the basement floor. Water seepage into the basement has rendered our education and display area off limits until repairs can be made. Current plans include excavating around the exterior of the house, making any necessary repairs to and waterproofing the foundation, and installing footer drains that will be connected with the city storm sewer system.
Inside the basement, plans include
In addition, while we are replacing the landscaping disrupted by the excavation, we would like to pave the driveway and parking lot.
Despite the loss of most of our funding from the county in 2008, we have been able to keep the museum operating with the support of our members, with hundreds of volunteer hours, with fundraising events, and with grants from local foundations. In the past few years, we have provided a new roof, painted the exterior, cleaned and repaired the windows, replaced the railings and spindles on the porches, replaced the furnace& added air conditioning, and restored our priceless collection of photographs of Civil War soldiers, all without a capital campaign.
However, this major project is too large to tackle with yard sales and raffles.
Our board has authorized a capital campaign to raise at least $150,000 to fix the immediate problems and make much needed renovations.
